Set in early-1970s Harlem, Manhattan. Friends since childhood, the nineteen-year-old Tish and her boyfriend Alonzo, who goes by the name Fonny, dream of a future together. When Fonny is arrested for a crime he did not commit, the newly pregnant Tish does everything to clear his name, with the unconditional support of her parents and relatives. Tish must face the unexpected prospect of the motherhood without the partner at her side. Weeks become months but the girl does not lose hope, supported by her inner strength and by the affection of her family, prone to doing anything for the benefit of Tish ad her husband.
